Lords of Outland
Rent Romus - alto, soprano, C-Melody saxophones
CJ Borosque - trumpet, electronics
Ray Schaeffer - bass
Philip Everett - drums
In 1995 Rent Romus created a series of compositions based on the writings of San Francisco experimental psychologist Dr. Charles Ponce who had written a number of essays on what he termed Blade Runner Psychology as well as the beginnings of a science fiction book. After reading these excerpts he completed the original suite of music entitled “the Proceedings” for his group the Lords of Outland. Although a few of the pieces have been played outside of their original context over the years, the entire suite had only been performed in 1996 at the original Stork Club in Oakland California. Now this project has been reinvented with new arrangements and compositions which will be presented at Berkeley Arts ...
Eli Wallace - solo piano
Eli Wallace has been cultivating this solo piano repertoire for about a year. The goal in this project is to compose music that encompasses the wide range of influences from which he draws, and thereby write music intended to be played for solo piano. As a pianist trained in classical and jazz piano, these two influences emerge side by side in this music. The compositions have elements of ornate composed material followed by free and/or structured improvisation, and many of the compositions themselves follow standard jazz form. Aspects of free jazz, post bop jazz, groove-oriented music, modern classical improvisation, 20th century classical composition (recent influences include John Cage, Edgard Varese, Olivier Messiaen, Pierre Boulez, etc.) are all present. The end result is compositions that blur the line between improvisation and notated music in an outpouring of torrid self-expression.
