Lisa B is a unique combination: an accomplished jazz-and-beyond vocalist and an award-winning poet. She integrates both sung and spoken verse in her original songs and adventurously reimagined standards.
Her pioneering recordings dating from the '90s to today have created an enthralling hybrid of jazz, hip-hop, and soul grooves; original lyrics and poetic rap; and expressive, creative renditions of the Great American Songbook.
“She totally captivated the audience. She is an originator, her arrangements are mesmerizing, and her band is great!” - Gary Hamada, Jazz and Blues Company/KRML-FM, Concert Manager
“A singer, spoken-word artist and poet with an incisive way of chronicling situations, memories, and emotions… a pliable, expressive voice dipped in blue… saucily suggestive… imagistic.” — Lucy Tauss, Jazz Times
“Multi-talented jazz singer, songwriter, and poet Lisa B... has been weaving 'must pay attention to every word' storytelling magic...throughout her unique 20+-year career.” — Jonathan Widran, JW Vibe
“Daring, dexterous singer/songwriter/poet Lisa B... with appeal to both traditional and contemporary jazz tastes and even hip-hop hipsters.” — Jonathan Takiff, Philadelphia Daily News
“Inventive and often haunting.” — Scott Yanow, L.A. Jazz Scene
“Whatever she knows or sings comes, in Whitman’s term, from the body electric.” — Frances Mayes, author, San Jose Mercury
“With the freewheeling control of the raw materials that only the finest jazz practitioners possess... a true American original.” - Downbeat critic Ted Panken in his liner notes
The Back Room is an all-ages, BYOB (for those 21+) space, dedicated to (mostly) acoustic music of all kinds. You are welcome to bring your own adult beverage with no additional corkage fee. If you need more information or have any questions, please call us: #510-381-1997. Thank you for your support!
A SPECIAL NOTE FROM THE BACK ROOM:
Thank you for your interest in this show. To stay in the loop about our future shows, please join our mailing list here. This show is part of our outdoor concert series, which is very different in atmosphere and logistics from our indoor shows.
Under the circumstances, we recommend masks, even though we are outside. We hope that you are vaccinated, although we do not require it for our outdoor shows. We will continue to socially distance our seats, but you may rearrange them to your liking. And those seats will be standard folding chairs - no comfy couches outside, but they will be comfortably shaded. Only 60 tickets will be sold, and we expect all or most of them to be bought in advance. (Reimbursement for cancellation is guaranteed with 24-hour notice, and rain may cause a cancellation from our end). If a show is sold out, you may contact Sam via email ([email protected]) for permission to bring your own seats (and be charged at the "door" instead of in advance).
Please keep in mind that late afternoons can be chillier than expected, even on a warm spring day, especially when sitting still, so bring an extra layer! Cups of water will be available, but it might be a good idea to bring your own drinks/snacks.
