Hi
I thought I would share Sheldon Brown's message about his upcoming concert at Musically Minded Academy, on November 19th, as part of the In The Moment Concert Series that I produce. I encourage you to see any music you love at this time. Music has long been a unifier and the soundtrack to any important movement in history. It resonates with the human spirit, because it is a remarkable part of being human. Lift every voice and sing, not to forget, but to remember who we are.
Our concerts are now in partnership with Jazz In The Neighborhood!!!

The Sheldon Brown Sextet presents
Love, Gloom, Cash, Love by Herbie Nichols
Dear Friends,
I’m very excited to let you know about a show I’ll be doing on November 19th at Musically Minded Academy. I’ve put together a sextet of some amazing players to perform some original arrangements of the music from Herbie Nichols’ classic 1957 album Love, Gloom, Cash, Love…. Love, Gloom, Cash, Love was Herbie’s final album, and features 7 of his quirkily brilliant original compositions, along with a couple of classic standards and a very cool tune by drummer and composer Denzil Best.
This show is produced by Jim Bennett, as part of his In the Moment series, and is presented by Jazz in the Neighborhood and Musically Minded Academy.
November 19th, 8:00 P.M.

Sheldon Brown Sextet is:
Sheldon Brown - Alto Saxophone
Ben Goldberg - Clarinet
Darren Johnston - Trumpet
Matt Clark - Piano
John Shifflett - Bass
Jason Lewis - Drums
I’ve studied the music of Herbie Nichols for years, and have been fortunate to be able to perform it with the amazing musicians listed above in a couple of different formats: as a quintet with Darren, Matt, John and Jason, and as quartet, with Ben, Jason and John. I’m very grateful to Jim Bennett, Mario Guaneri (director of Jazz in the Neighborhood) and Musically Minded Academy to have an excuse to put together this sextet.
For those unfamiliar with Herbie Nichols’ darkly humorous masterpieces, you’re in for a treat. Often hailed as another “Monk”, Nichols composed dozens of brilliant pieces, many of which he recorded in the piano trio format. Love, Gloom, Cash, Love featured drummer and longtime Charles Mingus associate, Danny Richmond and stellar bassist George Duvivier.
